Delta County, located on the western slope of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, southeast of Grand Junction, is one of the most beautiful and unique places in the nation. Today, it is known for exceptional outdoor recreational splendor, natural beauty, unique geological formations, its gold-medal fishing, prized big game hunting, award-winning wines, fruits and vegetables. As a community, we have worked hard and invested in the resiliency of this economy and believe that Delta County is positioned to be a model for a diversified and resilient economy based on:

Sustainable traditional and organic agriculture

Outdoor Recreation—hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and biking

Agri-tourism

Renewable energy creation and education

Local art, music and creative industries

Establishing a manufacturing innovation center for agriculture, and expanding food processing operations;

Developing a regional food hub and retail destination for locally produced food; and

Rural broadband

The North Fork Valley in Delta County has been designated by the Governor as a Colorado Certified Creative District – one of only twelve in the state. We want to see the North Fork Valley’s uniqueness nurtured and allowed to grow to its greatest potential as a resilient and thriving economy.

The lifeblood of Delta County is the public lands that surround it and quality of life it offers to those seeking a unique rural lifestyle. The clean water, air and food now abundant in Delta County are a big part of what nourishes our creative and dynamic community. We believe that the responsible stewardship of our surrounding public lands is essential to supporting the underpinnings of our transitioning economy, and to assuring the quality of life we now enjoy and wish to preserve for future generations.

Our strength is rooted in compatible industries working together to enhance the lands, water and soil that we depend upon today and into the future. Resource management planning on public lands around Delta County can make or break this vision. I support resource management planning that does not threaten resilient economy efforts. A federal resource management plan should not be used as a backdoor means to zoning Delta County heavy industrial. Delta County’s support of Alternatives C and D endorses backdoor industrial oil and gas zoning. I respectfully request that Delta County Commissioners support a no-oil and gas leasing alternative for the BLM’s revised Resource Management Plan for the Uncompahgre Field Region, which prevents Delta County from turning into an industrial zone, and ensures a resilient and strong economic future for Delta County for the next 20 years.
