Dear Mr. Shoop, Ms. Connolly, and Mr. Larson,

I am writing to request that you cancel the leases offered in the proposed December 7th, 2018 Lease Sale in the Uncompahgre Field Office.

These leases are completely incompatible with the community and economy in the North Fork Valley, and offering them for sale now, with the finalization of the revised Uncompahgre Field Office Resource Management Plan looming on the near horizon, is unacceptable.
• Proposing leases around Paonia Reservoir and our watersheds is unconscionable;
• Proposing oil and gas leases over a closed coal mine is irresponsible;

The risks are simply too high, and unacceptable.

The only available way to ensure that the North Fork Valley is not irreparably harmed by oil and gas development is by adopting a no-leasing alternative in the RMP. Offering these leases for sale prior to the finalization of the RMP would absolutely prejudice the final revision process.

The North Fork Valley is an inappropriate place for oil and gas development. We are home to the highest concentration of organic farms in the state, and our farms, vineyards, and orchards attract visitors from around the globe. The wildlands, streams, and rivers around us attract hunters, anglers, and recreationists. Some of these offered leases are adjacent to the dam for the Paonia Reservoir. This is some of the most unstable geology in Colorado, and recent research shows that fracking itself induces seismicity, threatening infrastructure like reservoirs and dams.

Finally, extracting all that gas will require the construction of more unregulated gas gathering lines. The BLM should impose a moratorium on all oil and gas development until the safety of this unregulated infrastructure network can be independently assured.

I therefore oppose this proposed lease sale and request that you withdraw all of the leases offered in the Proposed December 7th, 2018 Lease Sale in the Uncompahgre Field Office.
