Event Details

Please join us for the second film in the Rural Cinema Series: Heroes of Our Time on November 10th.

The second film in the 5-part film series is The Devil We Know.  We are excited to partner with Working Films and the Paradise Theatre to bring you this critically important film.

The Devil We Know is the story of how a group of citizens in West Virginia take on a powerful corporation after they discover it has knowingly been dumping a toxic chemical –now found in the blood of 99.7% of Americans – into the drinking water supply. This film documents the unraveling one of the biggest environmental scandals of our time. As the citizens of Parkersburg rise up against the forces that polluted their town, the story builds out to dozens of other American cities. In fact, at least 6.5 million Americans in 27 states are drinking water tainted by the Teflon toxin. Exposure to the chemical has even become a global phenomenon, spreading to places like China and the Netherlands. Parkersburg is ground zero for this story, but this clearly is not about one place or one chemical: because of the power of the chemical lobby, C8 is one of more than 80,000+ untested chemicals that have been released onto the market, their dangers unknown.

This event is made possible by a grant from Working Films to bring educational films around environmental justice/injustice to rural communities. This is the second film in a curated film series that will take place in September, November, December 2020 and January 2021. Each film will build upon the other in a series that explores drivers behind environmental injustice (in our case oil and gas development in sensitive areas), the political and economic resistance to action, and the solutions and heroes of our time (not who you might expect).

Suggested donation: $10.
