30,000 Acre Comment Deadline Extended to April 20th, 2012 – Send Your Comments TODAY!

CITIZENS FOR A HEALTHY COMMUNITY
ACTION ALERT!
4/3/2012

SEND YOUR COMMENTS TODAY ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR THE NORTH FORK VALLEY LEASE PROPOSAL.

Citizens for a Healthy Community thanks the 3,000 concerned citizens who submitted a letter to the BLM during the scoping comment period.  An estimated 63% of households in the North Fork Valley cared enough to write to the BLM to ask for withdrawal of the 22 lease parcels!

The Environmental Assessment was release on March 7th with a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) which states that leasing will not result in any negative impacts to the community that warrant further analysis.  It is clear that the BLM has chosen to take a “business as usual approach,”  particularly since the Environmental Assessment states that leasing and drilling could result in significant economic costs to the North Fork Valley.

A second opportunity for public comment is now open.  Your voice is critical to applying the pressure to remove all 22 lease parcels from the sale. Please send your comments to the BLM today.

If you sent a letter during scoping comments, write the BLM again.  If you didn’t send comments earlier this year, send a letter now.

SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS ON THE
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT TODAY.

Deadline for comments – Extended to April 20th

Sample LETTER to BLM

Dear Bureau of Land Management,

Please accept my comments on the Environmental Assessment regarding the August 2012 oil and gas lease sale. (“I am a resident of…”,  or “I live adjacent to parcel #”,  or “My family has farmed/ranched in this area for XXX years”, or “I work in the XXX business.”)

I support the No Action/No Leasing Alternative that will result in the withdrawal of all 22 parcels and all 30,000 acres in the proposed lease sale.

The 1989 Resource Management Plan did not analyze the impacts of horizontal hydraulic fracturing because this technology did not exist when the Plan was written. As a result, BLM must analyze the impacts of horizontal hydraulic fracturing in this EA.

BLM cannot put off analyzing the impacts of oil & gas development until some future date.  All impacts must be analyzed before selling the right to develop the oil and gas in these parcels.

BLM must prepare a more detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Negative impacts to agriculture located in the North Fork Valley are unacceptable and must be fully analyzed prior to leasing.

The EA must include an analysis of the socio-economic impacts to the North Fork Valley.  (Provide BLM with your personal story about how your livelihood depends upon maintaining the health of our community.)

(If you sent a letter to BLM during the scoping comment period in December/January, tell BLM that you want to “incorporate by reference” your previous letter.)

Thank you for taking my comments into consideration,
