04 Jul SAVE THE NORTH FORK VALLEY FROM OIL AND GAS LEASING
On July 2, 2018 the Bureau of Land Management announced its December 2018 oil and gas lease sale which includes lease parcels in the North Fork Valley. Of the nearly quarter-million acres offered in this sale across Colorado, nearly 8,000 are in the North Fork Valley in our watershed, around Paonia Reservoir, and over a coal mine.
The North Fork Valley is world renowned as “Colorado’s Farm to Table Capital,” with the state’s highest concentration of organic and sustainable farms and ranches, and home to a growing agritourism industry comprised of farms, wineries, markets, shops, restaurants and a season full of festivals. The North Fork Valley and West Elk region is one of only two federally-designated wine-growing regions in the state, due to its unique “terroir.” The qualities and features of the valley merit such recognition and protection.
The parcels for sale are dangerously close to Paonia Reservoir and Paonia Dam, located in critical watersheds for irrigation and drinking water, and in geologically unstable areas which puts the North Fork Valley at risk. Take action today to Save the Fork Valley from new oil and gas leasing.
